South Venice is separated from the Gulf of Mexico by a narrow strip of Lemon Bay. Prior to construction of the Intracoastal Waterway in the 1960s, the residents of South Venice had beach access via a wooden bridge that connected the South Venice mainland to the northern portion of Manasota Key. When the Army Corps of Engineers removed the bridge, the residents fought to have their beach access restored. Now a ferry service takes South Venice residents back and forth to the beach. The ferry runs 6 days a week with one day a week reserved for maintenance. The trip is a short one, of approximately 1,000 feet and lasting only about 5 minutes. The beach is pristine and extremely private. . |
