| The Harbour
Heights Civic Association (HHCA) has been in existence since 1956.
It was organized for the betterment of the community, a purpose which
holds true to this day. Over the years there have been many changes in
Harbour Heights, but the Civic continues to work for the community. The
Harbour Heights Civic Association is a non-profit corporation whose
officers are elected by the members and serve with no salary or other
compensation.
Since the very beginning the Civic has been involved
with area improvements. One of the original beautification projects was
the creation of the median in Broadpoint Drive. The median was created
and sodded and lined with 20-foot palms, with smaller palms on either side
of the drive. The original palms are no longer there, but the community
continues efforts to replant and maintain the median.
When the original developer (Charlotte County Land
& Title Company) began having financial problems, it was HHCA that
pulled the community together to maintain the clubhouse, pool, and roadside plantings on a volunteer basis. The
HHCA, working with the county,
had many of the roads, abandoned by the developer, paved. HHCA was also
responsible for initiating a program for dredging badly neglected
canals. This program was responsible for an influx of waterfront
building. The HHCA was responsible for supplying pine seedlings to
the community to replace the trees taken by the developer.
The current Civic Association building was designed
and built through the efforts of the members. The first Association
meetings were held in the Harbour Heights clubhouse. Because of the
great turnout of the original members, it became necessary to build the
current Harbour Heights Civic Association building. Today the Civic
building is used as a meeting place for various clubs as well as HHCA
meetings and functions. |
